Dumile Mbebe Studio, Site C, Cape Town, South Africa, 1999
These are studios which I photographed in the townships of Cape Town around 1999.
The red chair belonged to Dumile Mbebe.
Dumile photographed everything that could fit into his shack: bridal couples, injuries for insurance, make-ups, break-ups, travelers and locals etc.
We lost touch, but I was determined to help Dumile produce a book on all his work.
On a cold day I happened to meet him at the local laboratory, we embraced and I outlined the plan. He paused, took a step away from me, and said, 'I burned all my negatives on the weekend. I ran out of space.'
