One of these subseries — the “Balaclava” collection — show close-up views of residents wearing a traditional headgear with only their eyes visible to the camera. This series closely resonates with the explorations of power, access, and visibility explored in the panorama images. Southwood describes himself as an artist who “considers questions of power and privilege in relation to portraiture” and finds an important encounter in these images, wherein subjects choose to obscure their faces for his photograph. The portraits further echo the latent tension Southwood perceives in the dam. The strobe lighting sets the subjects apart from dim surroundings and creates a theatrical disconnect symbolic of the literal restriction to the dam. In some of the portraits the dam is visible, once again making reference to the reservoir as a “blank and distant water mass” and as a “perpetual backdrop.”I undertook three trips to Lesotho before feeling comfortable photographing these young herders.'

At the end of every work day on the reservoir, I printed the portrait for each subject and handed it over.

When I go back to these villages now, the photos are clearly prized because they are thumbed and worn.

Unframed Archival inkjet on Hahnemuhle 300 gsm

L 105 x 84 cm edition 4

M 75 x 60 cm edition of 3

S 52 x 42 cm edition 3

Liteboho Lelia, Lesotho, 2015

This print, signed on Verso 1/1 AP

Framed with museum glass.: 45 x 35cm

Archival inkjet print on 250 GSM Baryta Paper

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0481/1820/2528/products/sou_framed_lesotho_20200907202009070014.jpg?v=1603531542
n1-image-framed
N1 #25, 2008

The players in this photograph have been described as having 'divided attention': nobody seems to be aware of each other, which lends a curious theatricality to this stage. By this I mean a particular power to weight ratio and again a certain economy of means. The decision to work in the cultural, civic field implies limited resources and maybe it’s been due, in part to tight parameters and limited means, that such innovative, sustainable solutions to problems have emerged and Local Studio’s buildings have been able to individuate themselves so early on, and with such ease and functionality.

While building with unlimited resources can chamfer a process and make for impressive structures I feel that being able to absorb the vagaries of working in Jhb and make the most out of them embeds a in a project a sort of indigenous knowledge, being as a function of context in the broadest sense.

Print

Corner Jorissen and Melle 19/03.2018

Unframed, Signed and Editioned print on Baryta paper 29 x 21 cms

Edition 1/15

These are studios which I photographed in the townships of Cape Town around 1999.

The red chair belonged to Dumile Mbebe.

Dumile photographed everything that could fit into his shack: bridal couples, injuries for insurance, make-ups, break-ups, travelers and locals etc.

We lost touch, but I was determined to help Dumile produce a book on all his work.

On a cold day I happened to meet him at the local laboratory, we embraced and I outlined the plan. Goldblatt was born in Randfontein–a mining town on the Witwatersrand gold reef–in 1930, the grandson of Lithuanian-Jewish migrants who settled in South Africa after escaping persecution in Europe. After the death of his father in 1962, Goldblatt sold the family clothing business to become a full-time photographer.
